Adelaide star Eddie Betts says racism towards indigenous AFL players remains an issue after a Port Adelaide fan threw a banana at him.

Betts, who was targeted by the female supporter in the dying stages of Saturday night's Showdown at Adelaide Oval, says the incident shows the need for greater education on racial sensitivity.

"It's sad that racism still exists in our game ... hopefully people can learn from it," Betts told the Crows website on Monday.
